Taken on 21st September, 2009 in Cayos Cochinos, Honduras. Nikon D90, Exposure 1/1600s at f/5.3, Focal Length 80mm, ISO Speed 200. Show on Flickr.

Oisin, Tigo, Cat.
Cayos Cochinos.
September 2009.

Photos like this one are ritualistic as we say goodbye to people and places. I've thought of them in some way as lesser for a long time, preferring them to be taken with Cat's little camera and shared on facebook, far away from whatever higher things I'm up to with my camera and my blog.

As we said goodbye to Tigo, caretaker on this small private island we'd stayed on for a couple of nights, Cat's camera was dead so we fired up mine to take a few snaps.

Afterwards I thought that preserving memories is as valid a use of photography as anything else I'm doing here so it was time to stop discriminating and just share.

I also didn't take any other pictures that day: )

This is very Hitchcokian. And I'm glad you're spreading Lennie's love across South America.

Hey, I resent having that horrible Diane Arbus photo as my profile pic on this thing!

Sorry Nathalie.. horrible picture stays for now: ) but you can upload your own at http://gravatar.com and it will show here (and on other blogs that are set up to pull it in)

Been meaning to update the site so it selects from a bunch of different *iconic* images if you haven't set up a gravatar but haven't gotten to it yet. Who, from a classic image, would you like to be?

I wear the T-shirt with pride!

I love this picture - it is like a video of Catherine caught in a single image. I can almost hear her voice.

And I love that we can see 'under the boardwalk' also.

On another note - maybe preserving memories is a very lofty use of a camera? I look forward to more of these shots.

Preserving memories is certainly a cherished use of a camera. In many situations, from travel to family gatherings, it verges on unthinkable that pictures would not be taken. Many of my photographs here fall into a different category though, where I am not so much trying to preserve a particular moment but use my surroundings to make some kind of an artistic or social statement.

It's nice to leave that aside though and concentrate on the personal. I love that you see so much of Catherine here.
